Frequently asked questions

Can I bring my dog or cat to Osaka?

Yes — Osaka follows Japan's national pet import rules. See the checklist above and the full Japan guide for microchip, rabies, certificate and entry requirements.

Does Japan require a rabies antibody (titer) blood test?

Yes — for pets arriving from unlisted / higher-risk origin countries. The FAVN/RFFIT rabies antibody test must be ≥ 0.5 IU/ml (verbatim 'Antibody titer against rabies must be equal to or greater than 0.5 IU/ml'); blood must be drawn 'after' the 2nd rabies dose; the result is valid for 2 years from the blood-draw date; testing is limited to MAFF-designated laboratories (micro-RFFIT is not accepted). The designated-laboratory list changes: Biobest Laboratories Ltd. was removed on 2025-06-25 — check the latest list before relying on it.

Is there a quarantine for pets entering Japan?

No routine quarantine when your pet meets every requirement. Non-compliant animals can be detained. For compliant animals the on-arrival inspection is completed 'within 12 hours' (verbatim 'the quarantine period will be within 12 hours'). Non-compliant animals face quarantine detention of up to 180 days or return; care and all costs are borne by the importer, and care providers are based only at the Narita, Haneda and Kansai branches.

How much does it cost to live in Osaka as a nomad?

A one-bedroom flat in the centre runs about $800. The national single-person monthly estimate is $2,700 — a country-level figure, not city-specific.
